Whitmore Street Crossing
Sir, —Once again we saw another accident yesterday at that most dangerous comer, the intersection of Whitmore street and Fitzgerald and Bealey avenues. Children living west of Whitmore street attending the Richmond School have to cross this intersection daily. They have the protection of neither a pedestrian crossing nor a school patrol, and because of the large volume of traffic today, it has become essential for parents to accompany their children to and from school each day to ensure their safety. There have been many accidents, some fatal, at this intersection and after a magistrate’s decision after an accident “give way” signs were erected in Bealey avenue. These, however, do not in any way alleviate the danger to pedestrians, especially small children crossing Whitmore street. This intersection surely warrants traffic lights or at least a pedestrian crossing.— Yours, etc., WORRIED PARENT. March 10, 1967.
[The City Council traffic superintendent (Mr J. F. Thomas) replies: “Traffic lights have been authorised for this intersection and they should be installed within the next few months.”]
