U.K. Farm Subsidies

Sir, —The Minister of Overseas Trade (Mr Marshall) said today that it was “disappointing” to be faced with the prospect of increasing stocks of home-produced butter coming on the British market. Primarily, would he suggest that British farmers should curtail their production to enable New Zealand butter producers to dominate this market? The fact that the British Government is subsidising the production of cattle and sheep, while subsidies are being lifted here is illuminating, particularly in connexion with butter. Mr Peart, the Minister of Agriculture, emphasised that agriculture was expected to contribute to “important saving” by increasing production. Would anyone suggest that the Common Market could in any way solve marketing dilemmas and contradictions? —Yours, etc., D.H.C. March 17, 1967.
