U.K. Elections
Sir, —The severe smack in the face to Harold Wilson in the results of the three recent by-elections is the first sign of sanity in Great Britain since independence was refused Rhodesia in 1965. The main causes are the revulsion of many electors at the prospect of Britain’s joining the E.E.C., the heavy unemployment, and the Labour Government policies on defence, prices, and incomes. A further factor which has been carefully excluded in the news media was this: teams from all over the country converged on these electorates and propounded the truth on
Rhodesia. They also informed workers of the build-up of the counter-sanction campaign, the boycott of British goods until sanctions are lifted, which is now swinging into action in 17 countries. The British workman who normally couldn’t care less about events in Africa is at last commencing to wake up, now that he is learning the facts on Rhodesia denied him to date, and the fact that his bread and butter has become endangered.—Yours, etc., AID RHODESIA. March 16, 1967.
