RACING Stablemates Picked For Ashburton

Seminole, Kalimera and Danny Kaye will give G. S. Barr’s Riccarton stable strong representation in the T.A.B. double races at the Ashburton County Racing Club’s autumn meeting on Monday.

Seminole is one of the runners with strong form credentials in the first leg, the Caltex Gold Cup. Kalimera and Danny Kaye will be rivals in the Coldstream Handicap, a race for open-class sprinters.

Seminole will be trying for her fourth middle-distance win this season for her Christchurch owner, Mr D. W. Wild, Her most recent success was in the Midsummer Handicap on her home course early last month. Seminole is well-in at the weights. She has 8-4, 41b less than General Gilbert and Tumble, which are equal topweights.

General Gilbert gained his first win of the season at his last start in the Morley Memorial Handicap at Westport last month.

Tumble will be trying for his third middle-distance win in succession. He beat the open stayers hands down at Motukarara a fortnight ago and won again in the Papakaio Handicap at Oamaru last Monday.

Motukarara form will be valuable if Gingerbread gets into the finish. She made her best showing in three openclass starts by running second to Tumble in the Peninsula Handicap. f Certain lacks recent form but he is bound to have solid backing and could go very well in the hands of W. D. Skelton. Three sprint races on his present campaign should have brought him near his peak.

On Oamaru form Golden Vanity and Glocca Morra have good chances. The former improved a sound record of minor placings by finishing third to Tumble and Balmaris last Monday. Glocca Morra gave her rivals a sound beating in the Autumn Highweight, an event for openclass stayers. Versatile Kalimera is a versatile type which can sprint and stay. The last time she raced Ichtar beat her by inches in the Provincial Handicap, one mile and a quarter, on her home course. Two other seconds were in open sprints. Kalimera showed a high standard of fitness in her semi-final gallop on Thursday. She was going well just ahead of Danny Kaye at the end of a fast-run five furlongs. Danny Kaye, like his stablemate, was placed at Riccarton the last time he raced. He finished third to Pharasal and Her Pal in the Amuri Handicap. Her Pal improved on that placing by winning the open sprint at Motukarara a fortnight ago. She should be one of the strong chances again. The runner-up by half a head to Her Pal at Motukarara was the speedy Carester. Although she will meet Her Pal on 21b worse terms there should be little between them.
