AWARDS IN ART

Opportunities For Holders

New Zealand can expect to see more of its award holders in the performing arts return to this country because of employment opportunities now being provided for them with the progressively increasing assistance of the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council, says a statement from the council announcing its award scheme for 1968. The council says that the developing regional orchestras, the rapidly emerging regional theatres, the New Zealand Ballet and the New Zealand Opera Company are all in a position to offer work to award holders. The council’s revised scheme provides for all aspects of training in the arts. It is hoped that it will meet the needs of New Zealand adequately for a number of years. The scheme, which has always operated on a competitive basis, will continue in this way for 1968. In 1964, the sum of £19,480 was spent on this part of the council’s work and in 1965, at a cost of £21,555, 49 awards were made, eight in music, 17 in drama, 16 in ballet and eight in the visual arts.
