VIETNAM BOMBING
Defence By Johnson (N. Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) NASHVILLE (Tennessee), March 17. President Johnson said on Wednesday that the bombing of North Vietnam had caused “serious disruption” to Hanoi’s war effort and that it would be stopped only if Hanoi undertook a reciprocal military reduction. In a speech prepared for delivery to a joint session of the Tennessee Legislature, the President said that American policy in Vietnam was based on blocking infiltration from the North and that bombing of the North was “entirely consistent” with that policy. ,Mr Johnson said: “The bombing is entirely consistent with our limited objectives in South Vietnam.
“The strength of Communist main force units in the South is clearly based on infiltration from the North. “It is simply unfair to American—and Vietnamese—soldiers to ask them to face increased enemy personnel and fire-power without making an effort to halt that infiltration.”
