Wool Auctions Likely To Go
(New Zealand Press Association) DANNEVIRKE, March 17. A prediction that the auction system for the disposal of wool in New Zealand would soon disappear, was made today by Mr R. D. Powdrell.
He is a member of the meat and wool section of the Southern Hawke’s Bay provincial executive of Federated Farmers.
Mr Powdrell said the farmers could not really be blamed if they sold their clip by negotiation. “You get the most you can for your wool and you know what you are going to get,” he said. “There is a terrific amount of wool being sold by negotiation. “It won’t be very long before the auction system blows up.” Report Delayed At the meeting of the Electoral Committee of the Wool Board in Wellington today Mr W. R. Mortin, of Auckland, expressed concern at the delay in presentation of the Wool Marketing Study Group’s final report.
He said that at the launching of the International Wool Secretariat it was accepted by its managing director, Mr W. J. Vines, that some change in the system of selling wool would take place. Both the Australian and South African Industries had voiced dissatisfaction with the auction system. “Are we going to wait another two or three years to see what others are going to do?” he asked.
Mr W. J. Polson, of Wanganui, said that whenever a change in the selling system was suggested hy anyone, they were told to wait for the report. The general manager of the
Wool Board, Mr J. D. Fraser, said he agreed the report should be brought down as soon as possible, but work was going forward as fast as was practicable. A report on overseas survey work was expected by the August meeting of the committee.
