Legal Aid Extended
AN extension of the free legal aid service available to members of the Automobile Association (Canterbury) has been approved by the council of the association. Now. any member who has received a summons for a driving offence may, where any reasonable doubt exists, obtain a free Interview with the association’s solicitors after consultation with the association.
The association may approve of payment of up to £7 7s towards the defence of a member, by either his own or the association’s solicitor, on non-indictable driving charges, providing the association’s solicitors decide the case should be defended.
Reasons for defending the case may be that it is a matter of public interest; that in the solicitors’ opinion the prosecution is clearly unwarranted or malicious; or that a member could not otherwise afford to defend a charge when a defence was clearly merited.
One of the main objects for which automobile associations were first formed was to protect tne legitimate interests of members, and it was no doubt from this that most associations had developed a legal service for their members, the general manager (Mr E. S. Palliser) told the council when the matter came before it.
