Pit Stops

The British Broadspeed racing team is to contest the British saloon car championship again this year. The team will field two 1000 c.c. 125 b.h.p. Anglias.

The British racing driver, Sir John Whitmore, has retired from racing. He made a name for himself in sports-car racing but became most famous in saloon cars, winning the British saloon car championship in 1961 and the European saloon car challenge in 1965. He first raced with Mini Coopers, and later with Lotus Cortinas. ♦ ♦ ♦

Honda is expected to produce some sports-rac-ing prototypes this season. * ♦ #

The rally-trim Cortina G.T.’s entered by Ford in the East African Safari rally will have a top speed of 105 m.p.h. Cylinder head revisions have raised the engine’s power output to 97 b.h.p. ♦ ♦ ♦

Prize - money totalling £1250 has been made available by the New Zealand concessionaires for Fiat, Torino Motors, for Fiat entries in the Wills Six-hours saloon car race. The managing director of Torino Motors (Mr R. W. Elliot) said the awards for Fiat entries will be £5OO for an outright win, £3OO for second place, £l5O for third place, £lOO for the index of performance winner, and £5OO for class winners. There will be an award of £25 for every, Fiat entry that finishes. * * *

Four of the seven interclub car rallies for the Lupp Cup have now been run. The present leader of the competition is the M.G. Car Club with 30 points, the University Motor Club is second with 24 points, and R.A.T.E.C. and Ellesmere Motor Club are third equal with 17 points, the Canterbury Car Club being next with 16 points. The best six rally results only are counted. * * *

Drivers expected to enter the Indianapolis 500 race this year include Graham Hill, Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, Lorenzo Bandini, Jochen Rindt, Chris Amon, Denis Hulme, Dan Gurney, R. Bondurant, Richie Ginther and Peter Revson.
