EUROPEAN ARTISTS
Exhibition In City An exhibition of 30 paintings by modern European artists will be held in Christchurch in June and July. The trustees of the National Gallery of Victoria have agreed to the paintings being brought to the city after they have been shown in Auckland. It was a wonderful gesture by the Victorian gallery, said the president of the Canterbury Society of Arts (Mr S. E Mair). All the paintings except one had been bought under the terms of the Felton bequest, and the exception was a gift to the gallery from the Contemporary Art Society in London.
If the necessary arrangements could be made to bring the paintings from Auckland they would be shown in the Durham Street Art Gallery in June and July, Mr Mair said. The paintings included works by the French artist Bernard Buffet, the GermanAmerican Max Ernst, the Dutchman Karel Appel, the Belgian Joseph Lacasse, and the Spaniard Antonio Tapies. The three English artists represented were Adrian Heath, Henry Mundy, and lan Stephenson.
