Sound Sale For Older Ewes At Coalgate Fair

There was a very* sound sale for older ewes at the Coalgate ewe fair yesterday, values being in line with recent rates. Most of these sheep were fine woolled.

For younger ewes, however, the market was somewhat variable. The best of the fine-wool two-tooth ewes met a very strong market, a number of sales being made between 80s and 90s.

However, the ewe lambs, which were mainly Romneys, sold well, making to 555. The offering totalled 10,687, compared with 10,531 last year. It included 3029 twotooth ewes (2165 last year), 4687 older ewes (5268), 2130 ewe lambs (2163), 453 wether lambs (294) and 388 wethers (641). There was a good clearance, sheep going to Rangiora, Oxford, Sheffield, Annat, Darfield, Hororata, Leeston, Dunsandel, Rakaia and Ashburton, as well as the immediate district. This was the final North Canterbury fair of the season. Two-tooth Ewes Compared with last year's fair. values for two-tooths showed a sharp decline, and even for fine-wool sheep some vendors appeared to show a drop of 30s to 40s, but in other cases values were down by only about 20s, which was more in line with the general decline for fine wools at this year’s round of fairs. Over a selection of mainly fine wool two-tooths sold yesterday and sheep from the same vendors offered last year, yesterday’s sale showed a slump of about 30s. The better fine wool twotooths sold well and in line with late rates, but the lesser quality sheep did not fare so well and it was here that some of the biggest drops were recorded. In the case of Romneys some vendors recorded drops of from 30s to almost 50s on last year’s fair.

The best of the fine wools realised from 85s to 90s with good at 75s to 83s. average at 60s to 67s and others at 46s to 595. The best of the Romneys in the selection made from 68s to 735, with average at 60s to 68s and others at 50s to 58s. Late shorn Romneys brought from 45s to 59s 6d.

The bulk of the older ewes were fine wools and most of the four-year-olds realised between 52s and 655, with the best making from 59s to 655, good from 52s to 55s 6d and late shorn from 39s 6d to 445. Late shorn Romneys sold to 47s 6d. In this section a selection of six pens sold yesterday and the same number of pens of the same vendors’ sheep sold last year showed an average variation in favour of last year’s fair of 19s, and In the five-year-old section the margin between the two years was of a similar order

In the five-year-old section the pick of the selection brought from 52s to 565, with good at 45s to 495, others at 36s to 41s, and late shorn from 36s to 375, with a single offering of Romneys making 48s 6d. Late-shorn four and five-year-old ewes brought from 38s to 41s. and some mixed aged ewes brought to 545. Annual draft Merinos sold from 22s to 32s and an offering of two-shear Merinos brought 48s. In the ewe lamb section the best of the Romneys sold from 47s to 555. with good at 40s to 47s and others making from 30s to 375. Some fine wools sold to 47s 6d for shorn Corriedales. Romney wether lambs made from 34s to 44s and shorn wether lambs brought from 32s 6d to 355. A handful of two-tooth wethers realised from 47s 6d to 52s and five-year-old Merino wethers from 29s to 335. Leading Salas Top price for two-tooth ewes went to C. C. Thorne, of Scotswood. He had 140 Corriedales at 90s and another 90 at 85s. He did not have sheep in last year’s fair when fine wool two-

For the lesser fine-wool sheep the market was not spectacular, however, the Romneys selling at fairly modest values a long way behind last year’s rates. The Romney sale was no doubt affected by a number of offerings being late shorn, and the sheep were sometimes small.

tooths ranged up to £5 9s for sheep from G. H. Grigg, of Haldon Pastures. Yesterday the Haldon Pastures sheep brought to 87s 6d for 70 and two lots of 65 and 90 sold for 85s. R. F. White, of Silverwood, who received £5 last year had a relatively good sale yesterday with 96 bringing 85s. T. D. F. Hight, of Hazelhurst, who was not represented last year, had a sale of 80 vesterday at 84s.
