Tennis Players To Be Busy

Some senior club tennis players in Christchurch are likely to have a busy time this week-end as a result of the day lost through rain last Saturday. Last Saturday’s matches, which were the final ones scheduled, will be played tomorrow and, if it is wet again, on Sunday. However, tomorrow’s senior men's and senior women s rounds are expected to make at least one play-off necessary. Any play-off would then be held on Sunday. If tomorrow’s matches were transferred to Sunday and a

play-off became necessary, it would probably have to be held after Easter. The final matches in the men’s grade premier section will be United (50 points) v. Edgeware '46); Elmwood (43) v. Woolston (21). Woolston is the only team out of the running.

The lower section, for the Hartford Shield, has been won clearly by North Linwood (73 points) which will play Cashmere (22). Beckenham (33) will meet University (32). Like the men, requiring a five-point margin to win, the women appear almost certain to be playing off on Sunday. Tomorrow, Edgeware (81) will play Avonside (54) and Elmwood (80) will meet United (40).

The association’s lower grades are also scheduled for completion this week-end. The second mixed grade has already been won by South Christchurch, first mixed A by Fendalton and president’s by St. Albans.

In senior reserve tomorrow the round from February 4 that was postponed by rain will be played and the final round on Sunday. After the final round of men’s second grade tomorrow, the sectional play-off will probably be on Sunday. The annual Easter tournament will complete the season. The tournament, for open, under-17, under-15 and under-13 sections, will be held on March 25, 26 and 27 and completed on March 28 if

necessary. Because of the early Easter, it is possible this year to hold the senior events on grass courts.

This year the tournament clashes with the first national hardcourt tournament which will be held in Dunedin at Easter and will be attended by some leading Canterbury players, including J. W. Mitchell, Misses R. Dillon, S. Field and C. Andrew. At the end of the summer season, the usual winter competition will be held on the same lines as that held last season. Teams of two men and two women will play men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. Entries will close on April 17.
