CHAMPIONS’ DOWNFALL
Mrs Papps Wins Fours The national title-holders were eliminated in the semifinals of the Christchurch women’s champion of champion fours yesterday. Mrs E. Edyvean lost to Mrs J. Papps and Mrs L. McKenzie went down to Mrs E. Warren.
The final, played between Mrs Warren (Barrington) and Mrs Papps (Mount Pleasant), was marred in the closing stages by failing light. Until the thirteenth end the game was fairly close, the score then being 9-7 in Mrs Warren’s favour. A three and a one on the next two ends put Mrs Warren 13-7 ahead. However, from the sixteenth end Mrs Papps produced better bowls and rallied strongly to score six shots without reply and lead, 17-13, on the last end. Mrs Warren could only add a two, and Mrs Papps won the final, 17-15. Results of other matches were:—
Fourth Round.—McKenzie 19, A. Manson 17; Papps 27, M. Doig 18: Edyvean 18. A. Smith 13; Warren 26, R. Bebbington 16. Fifth Round.—Papps 24. Edyvean 17; Warren 22. McKenzie 18.
