r PHE most recent building x or reconstruction work being done at Methven District High School has been in the secondary department. The alterations and improvements being made here have included the provision of a much improved sewing room and also a combined senior primary and secondary school library. This work has been in the hands of A. E. Hepburn, a local builder, and he will also be building a new hostel to accommodate women teachers at the school. In the secondary department toilet and cloakroom facilities are being converted into changing rooms with toilets and hot and

colder showers for boys and girls. A teachers’ workroom is being provided out of what was part of a small class room. There will also be an open area for lockers and cloakroom. The sewing room has been markedly improved. Linoleum has been laid on the floor, benches have been provided for electric sewing machines, fitting room facilities have been provided and lighting has also been considerably improved. What was a classroom, cloakroom and two small offices has been converted into a full-sized combined senior primary and secondary library. A library workroom and general storage area adjoins the library. New furniture for the library had not arrived by last week-end. Other facilities being provided in the alterations are staff toilets, a new cleaners’ room, a new caretaker's room, a new sick bay and an office for the senior secondary assistant. A section on the mountains side of the school baths has been purchased and it is to be converted into a car park. What was formerly an old toilet area near the baths is also to become the high school bicycle area. The provision of new entrance gates to the school—the memorial arch is actually outside the school boundary—and new fencing and re-sealing are all on the programme for early action. The Ministry of Works are currently negotiating for the purchase of another five acres of land adjacent to the school grounds.
