Blind Woman Will Edit Magazine
(Neto Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, March 15. The Dominion Association of the Blind’s quarterly magazine, “Focus,” has a new editor, Miss A. H. Aitken, of Epsom. Miss Aitken is blind.
She has taken over from Miss Anne Clarke, of Auckland, and plana to have an edition ready early next month. The magazine, which has a circulation of 3000, is sent free to every blind person in New Zealand. Some persons receive their copies in “talking book” cassettes. Miss Aitken hopes to have the magazine put on tape for persons with tape recorders. She is a member of the Tape Recorder Club, and uses her recording equipment to help with editorial work. Miss Aitken, who is 58, was born blind and at six was sent to Auckland from Dunedin to attend what was then called the Blind Institute. She is now an excellent
touch typist and works every day at Homed College as a Braille translator. Two years ago she travelled with a friend to Fiji, Hawaii. Japan, Formosa, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia. She made another trip to Australia, alone, lest Christmas.
