EARLY START
Although the New Zealand Rugby League team to tour Australia will not be selected until the middle of May, a number of provinces are aware of the importance of getting their players to a peak of fitness before then. The Wellington League, which has just concluded a most successful coaching course similar to that held in Christchurch, has had a squad of 19 players in constant training for the last three or four weeks.
Wellington will play Auckland on May 6. This match is the only one that will be played between two provincial sides before the New Zealand side goes away. West Coast’s first representative match will be against Canterbury at Christchurch on June 5. Despite this the West Coast League has been holding regular games among selected players on mid-week evenings. It could be a good counter to the Australians who start their pre-seasonal competition fixtures in February.
