CUSTOMS HAUL
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, March 14. Customs officers today uncovered the biggest load of smuggled radios found this year. These were packed in seven oil drums found in the island trader, Matua, which arrived at Auckland from Suva this morning. The smugglers had cut open the bottoms of the oil drums, packed the radios tightly inside the
drums, and then replaced the cut section with a rubber insert. The insert was then painted to resemble metal and smeared with oil. The drums were found at the ship’s gunport ready to be unloaded, probably as empty drums. Another cache was found hidden in a false bottom built into a school-type wooden stool. The haul is estimated to be worth £l5OO.
