REPAYMENT FOR KINDNESS

A young woman who took pity on another after having been told a hard-luck story went to work the next day and on returning found some of her possessions missing.

Miss Lyn Kemp, aged 18, said she had met the young woman on her way home from work. The woman had told her story and Miss Kemp had invited her to stay at her home. The woman said she was from Timaru, she was pregnant, her husband was away with the Navy, and because

she had not money she had slept the previous night in Hagley Park. Her husband had sent her £5O to come to Christchurch to get a flat and a friend had offered her a lift from Timaru. She had taken the £5O and after putting it in a suitcase had placed the case in the friend’s car. However, the friend after going off had not returned so she had come to Christchurch to find him. The police had refused to help her and because she had no money she would have to pawn her engagement ring. Miss Kemp had taken pity on the young woman, said she would lend her money and invited her to her home. The young woman had slept in a bed while Miss Kemp made do with a sofa.

Before leaying for work, Miss Kemp left a pound for the young woman to get some food. On her return she found a note from the young woman who said she had gone to find a job and had taken the radio to listen to while she had lunch. She also said she would telephone. ; When she did not ring Miss Kemp and her flatmate found [that Miss Kemp’s watch, the best of her clothing and £5 in rent money had also been taken. The police are investigating.
