Rule Of The Footpath
Sir.—Your feature, “Random Reminder” today prompts me to ask why the City Council does not restore the “Keep to the Left” signs on centre city footpaths. I feel this would avoid unseemly jostling, be of help on pedestrian crossings, and help the police. No infringement on personal liberty any more than requiring a motorist to keep to the left.—Yours, etc., A. CHAPMAN. March 3, 1967. [The chairman of the bylaws committee of the Christchurch City Council (Cr. H. P. Smith) replies: “The by-laws committee feels that the demands on our city footpaths do not at present warrant this further direction of the citizens. On the other hand, the practice of keeping to the left at all times is one to be commended.”]
