Stranded Launch Towed From Reef
(New Zealand Press Association)
BLENHEIM, March 13. The Picton commercial launch, Friendship, which was stranded on a reef at the northern end of Motuara Island, Queen Charlotte Sound, for three hours early this morning, was refloated on the rising tide with the assistance of the scenic cruiser Te Arowhenua.
With the help of another launch, the Ramona, the Friendship was towed to Pic-, ton where she was slipped for inspection. The Friendship went aground on a reef about 3.30 a.m. and was stranded by the rapidly-falling tide. The
Marine Department’s lighthouse tender Enterprise, on its way to Separation Point, failed in an attempt to tow the stranded vessel free. The Friendship had a 40 degree list to port and the deck was awash. The Te Arowhenua towed the Friendship off with the rising tide about 6.30 a.m. The vessel had sprung some planks forward on the port side and her hull is badly chafed near the propeller. She was taking water on the tow up the harbour, but her own pumps were able to cope.
