TASMAN RACE PLANNED
(N.Z. Press Association? WELLINGTON. The Evans Bay Yacht and Motor-boat Club has decided to hold a trans-Tasman race from Hobart to Wellington about January 9,1969, according to a member of the organising committee (Mr R. Telford). About 25 boats from New Zealand and overseas would compete in the event, which would be held a week after the finish of the 1968 SydneyHobart race. The committee was at present planning and organising the administration of the race, in conjunction with the Hobart Yacht Club, said Mr Telford. Evans Bay was working to set up prizes and prizemoney for the contest, which, if as successful as hoped, would be the first of a series of races to be held across the Tasman every four years from 1969.
“The success of the Auckland craft Fidelis in last year’s race should encourage more New Zealand competition,” said Mr Telford. With nine boats competing this summer, more could be expected to take part next season, and the interest in the nee could build each year.
