More Basketball Courts Planned
A first-class hard court surrounded by an embankment, and 12 additional hard courts are envisaged in a project of the Canterbury Women’s Basketball Association.
The plan, which would bring the number of sealed courts to 35, and cost about £9OOO, was outlined at the annual meeting of the association last evening.
The meeting was enthusiastic about the scheme, but problems of finance were raised. In a remit suggesting increased subscriptions, Miss E. Yates, the president, proposed that "annual subscriptions should be—senior, senior reserve, second, third and fourth grade teams pay £6 reducible; fifth and sixth grades £4 reducible.” Although Mie* Yates pointed out that subscriptions had not been raised for 20 years, suggestions for Increases beyond the remit were poorly received. Many club representatives felt that schoolgirl players In lower grades would be over-taxed.
The remit was passed with the deletion of the reducible clause, and this ahould bring the association an added £l5O a year. Four representatives, representing 12 votes, opposed the remit.
TMs £l5O, together with players’ fees and £2500 in hand, represents the association’s total funds, although it hopes to get a grant from the Golden Kiwi lottery.
Mrs M. Haughey, a dub representative, expressed concern over the lack of first-aid facilities during the competition tea. son. She said that with 2000 girls playing each week it was imperative that something be done.
Miss Yates said that ths St. John Ambulance Brigade wad very short of staff. The executive had approached the Red Cross tor hslp.
