Few Yachts Reach Line

Club yachtsmen took a hammering from the weather on Saturday when a boisterous southerly made conditions rough and rugged.

At the Christchurch, Canterbury and Pleasant Point dubs the weather took a heavy toll of competitors and there were few finishers. The sailing of the second heat of the inter-school yachting in these conditions might have been questioned, because many boys and girls are not greatly experienced, and sailing in very rough water can be most unpleasant. In spite of this, the Linwood High School crew won by a mere nine seconds after numerous capsizes. This school now has a handy points lead.

In contrast, conditions yesterday were calm and mild, and there was some excellent racing at the Christchurch club’s low Ude course. Jollfin (J. S. Wearn) headed his team mate, P. E. Pritchett, and then duelled with the Javelin, Wayward, for line honours. Wearn won the battle narrowly; B. G. de Thier made up ground after a bad start to finish second In his class.

A sound performance came from two youngsters in the Javelin, Ra, C. White and R. Mackay, who sailed most intelligently. De Thier did not have a happy day. for after this race he was out practising surfing In the breakers when his boat rolled from under him and the mast was smashed on the shallow sandy bottom.
