South Brighton Takes Surfing Pennant

South Brighton yesterday broke the Taylor’s Mistake club’s three-year reign as the leading competitive surf life-saving plub in Canterbury.

South Brighton held its lead of the three previous carnivals to win the championship pennant at the season’s fourth and final championship meeting at Taylors Mistake.

It was expected to win the pennant, decided on aggregate over the four carnivals. It lost last year’s series by only a point, after a countback, and last month it was second-placed club at the Dominion championships at Warrington Beach. The club was again a convincing winner of the women’s championship, although the 64-point margin it held last year was halved by North Beach. The sea was unusually calm for the carnival yesterday. Detailed points were:— Men.—South Brighton 143, Taylor’s Mistake 125, Sumner 70, Waimairi 63, North Beach 56, New Brighton 23. Women.—South Brighton 60, North Beach 34, Central Brighton Ladies’ 19, Taylor’s Mistake 15, Sumner 10, Waimairi 9.

South Brighton retained the prize trophy of the meeting, the Kesteven Cup. when it won the final of the non-champion-ship six-man rescue and resuscitation. Its 5.82 points deductions were 1.70 fewer than incurred by its main rival this season, Taylor's Mistake. The pennant winner's fourmap team that recently won the national alarm title suffered a shock defeat in the final when it was beaten by both North Beach and Taylor’s Mistake. North Beach's total of 2.60 was a remarkable effort after a poor swim by the Canterbury belt champion, L. D. Mclntosh, whose late arrival at the buoys cost the team 1.3 points. A member of the North Beach team. I. Gunthorp, won his first individual title, the senior surf race. Gunthorp was 30 yards clear of C. Read (Taylor’s Mistake). Third place was given to P. Goldsmith (Taylor's Mistake).

J. Stead (Taylor’s Mistake) won his first senior title when he beat his dub-mates I. Maskell and P. Jones by two yards in the beach sprint final. The host club won another morning event, the surf relay. Waimadrl A (senior) and Sumner A (junior), leaders in the canoa championships, both won their final races. The Sumner crew finished comfortably ahead of its rivals. Waimairi featured in a close finish.

The national ski race champion, P. Davies (Waimairi) was tipped off his ski a few yards from the finish of the ski race relay. He remounted and finished well ahead of R. and D. Dalton (North Beach).

The absence of two of Its regular crew members in the first of two races undoubtedly cost North Beach the senior boat race title. The boat was leading by four lengths when the inexperience of the substitutes was shown by a wave which turned the craft full circle. The boat was unplaced and North Beach lost its onepoint lead to South Brighton. North Beach won, 30 yards clear, in the final race but South Brighton, by being runner-up retained its title.
