INTEGRATION AIM OF M.P.
(New Zealand Preet Association!
HASTINGS, March 12.
The newly-elected member of Parliament for Southern Maori, Miss Whetu Tirikatene, said in Hastings last night that she intended to do what she could to integrate the two cultures of Maori and pakeha.
“Being the product of both cultures, as a half-caste, I consider it a vital responsibility to do so,” she said.
Miss Tirikatene said she fully supported the Labour Party’s policy on Maori representation in Parliament—a
matter to be determined solely by the Maori electorate when it considered it timely. “My personal opinion is that it is a matter of gauging the barometer of New Zealand’s social attitudes Miss Tirikatene said she would not like to see the Maori electorates abolished until a Maori candidate was returned by a European electorate.
“There is a multitude of subtleties involved and it is a matter of the evolution of race relationships," she said.
