Russley’s First Defeat For Three Years

The presence of half the Freyberg Rose Bowl team in its ranks failed to save the powerful Russley A team from defeat in the first round of the Woodward Cup senior inter-club golf competition yesterday.

Last year’s runnerup, Avondale, upset the champion side with a surprise first round victory at Wai-

tikiri. It was Russley’s first loss in the Woodward Cup contest for almost three years and it was fitting that Avondale was the team to accomplish the feat Three times in th e last five years it has held Russley to a half.

However, the great concentration required for victory in the morning told on Avondale when it met Christchurch in the second round. The team slid to defeat 6-2, and the- seasoned Christchurch side finished the day at he head of the competition. Harewood, the 1964 Cup winner, and Waitikiri, previously the last team to beat Russley, each gained a win and a half at Shirley and share second place in the competition. The points are:—Christchurch 2, Waitikiri IJ, Harewood li,’ Kaiapoi 1. Avondale 1, Russley A 1, Templeton 0, Russley B 0.

Rose Bowl Candidates The imminence of the Freyberg Rose Bowl team announcement focussed a good deal of attention on the performances of the leading players. R. E. Clements (Templeton). J. F. Logie and R. K. Atkinson (Russley) were unbeaten in the day’s play, but J. R. Broadhurst (Russley) went down twice, and D. R. Hope (Harewood) succumbed to the splendid put-

ting of J. P. Devine (Waitikiri). The reliable Avondale player, D. J. Gaudin, played a tight game, keeping his errors to a minimum, in beating Broadhurst, while F. W. Roberts gained a meritorious half from his game with Logie. A. K. Hynd, the Russley captain, is usually a fairly reliable barometer for his team’s fortunes. and when he bowed to C. H. Johnston the prospects were fair for Avondale. 13 Holes Halved Christchurch, strengthened by the inclusion of the former Wattlkiri No. 1, I. D. Dobson, overcame Avondale and Templeton with two convincing exhibitions. M. R. Blank, A. W. Robinson and Dobson played solidly in the leading positions, and Blank gave Clements an exceptionally close battle in the Templeton match. Thirteen holes were halved and Clements finished the winner, 2 and 1, in par figures. Hope played par golf for most of his round against Devine, but an early deficit could not be overcome in the face of the Waitikiri player’s deadly putting. Devine holed six putts of about Bft and his calm, methodical style on the greens left spectators In no doubt about the result.

In the afternoon Hope played with fine touch to beat the accomplished Kaiapoi No. I. B. L. Clegg, 5 and 4. Playing his 190th successive game for Russley, R. K. Atkinson built up a comfortable lead of five holes against the former Marlborough representative, J. Morgan, and won, 3 and 2. after some rearguard skirmishing by Morgan. Suffered Second Defeat A. J. Allison (Templeton) showed fallibility on the greens but played strongly to inflict a second defeat on Broadhurst. J. Teehan (Templeton) produced some excellent shots, too, but could not play them with as much consistency as his opponent. Logie, and was well beaten. One of the most interesting encounters was the match between J. A Orr (Harewood) and R. Farrant (Waitikiri), both players with prospects of Rose Bowl selection. The game, how-

ever, was a little disappointing, for while Orr was in grand form with his irons and on the greens, Farrant looked unconvincing, and, indeed, won only one hole.

An attacking Orr was two up after three holes, four up after six and when the match finished at the thirteenth he was two under par. Results:
