Fairlie Top Tennis Player In N.Z.
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON.
B. E. Fairlie (Auckland) became the undisputed top man of New Zealand tennis at Wellington yesterday.
He toppled the Wellington champion, R N. Hawkes, 7-5, 0-6, 7-5 in one of the finest matches seen on Central Park this season.
It was the first time Hawkes and Fairlie had met. For a while it looked as if the Weilingtonian was going to pull off the season’s surprise. He gave Fairlie one of the toughest matches of his I meteoric career.
Fairlie led Auckland to a crushing 9-3 victory in the Wilding Shield clash with Wellington, the holder. Rain on Saturday had left the court a slippery mess.
