FIRE IN SHIP
Some Stay Aboard THE HAGUE, March 12. The crew of the 2818ton Liberian vessel Dias today abandoned ship off the south-west tip of Portugal after fire swept through the engine room. Lloyd’s shipping intelligence said it was not immediately known how many crew were on board the vessel. The messages gave the ship’s position as about 60 miles south-east of Cape St. Vincent. Earlier messages said the crew was fighting the fire and that the Dias had called for immediate assistance. Later reports said the master and some of the engine-room staff were believed to have remained on board to fight the fire, which had spread to the deck.
