RUSSIA VOTES

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) MOSCOW, March 12. Votes in Russia’s provincial elections were cast today at dawn in the

Soviet far east, which is the first region to vote.

Nearly 145 million Soviet citizens will cast ballots today and next Sunday to elect Republican Supreme Soviets and local councils.

Because all polling stations open at 6 a.m., the first to vote were citizens in the far north-east of Siberia, where the local time is nine hours ahead of Moscow.

The Russian Federation, the Soviet Union’s largest Republic, the Ukraine, Byelorussia and six other Republics vote today. Six more Repulics go to the polls on Sunday. The candidates include 884 for the Republican Supreme Soviet, the provincial Parliament.

They are all unopposed nominees of the Communist Party and are therefore certain of being elected.
