S. VIETNAM RICE LOW

(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter —Copyright) SAIGON, March 12. Rice stocks in South Vietnam, formerly a rice-export-ing country, in the first week of March, were only sufficient for two weeks, a United States aid spokesman said in Saigon. The shortage has recently forced prices of the poorer quality rice, which is the staple diet of most of South Vietnam’s 16 million population, up nearly 50 per cent But the spokesman said, rice-carrying ships from the U.S. arrived in Saigon last Thursday and the shortage should now be eased and prices cut.
