MONOWAI LEADS
Dustin Cup Softball "The Press" Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH. The defending champion, Monowai (Christchurch), was the only unbeaten team after the first day’s play in the women’s national club softball tournament for the Dustin Cup at Palmerston North yesterday.
Broadway (Wellington) and Panmure Aces (Auckland), Monowai’s closest rivals, each lost once, and the Christ/ church club meets both teams today. Results were:
First Round.—Melville (Hamilton) 8, Broadway 6; Panmure Aces (Auckland) 4, Logan Park (Dunedin) 2; Monowai 8, Wolves (Hastings) 0.
Second Round.—Panmure Aces 4, Melville 1; Monowai 10, Logan Park 0; Broadway 7, Wolves
Third Round.—Logan Park 11, Wolves 1; Broadway 8, Panmure Aces 3; Monowai 9. Melville 4.
A two-base hit by B. Maklnson and hits by M. Hakapu and B. Turbott helped Monowai to score three runs in the first innings against Wolves. Scoreless in its next four innings, Monowai then launched another attack and added five more runs.
With Makinson pitching well, backed up by good fielding, Monowai only allowed four Wolves’ players on bases and none scored.
Further good pitching and tight fielding also kept Logan Park scoreless in Monowai’s second game, and the Christchurch club batted strongly to press home its advantage to the full.
Monowai’s fielding lapsed in its third match, and Melville gained a 2-0, and later 4-2 lead. However, a magnificent home run by Makinson produced three runs and gave Monowai the lead for the first time.
The Christchurch fielders tightened their play and denied Melville any further runs, while Monowai scored four more runs.
