Mistake In Report
The particular dangers of white spirit and of carbon tetrachloride, which were the subject of comment by the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board, were confused by the reporter, not the principal speaker, in the report printed in "The Press” on Thursday. Mr Boyle’s remarks prompted the board to ask the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation to refrain from recommending dangerous substances in broadcasts about eleaning. He first warned of the flammability of white spirit and then of the toxicity of carbon tetrachloride. Last evening Mr Boyle said he knew the distinctions well as a graduate of the Institute of Fire Engineers in Great Britain and a member by examination of the New Zealand Fire Brigade Officers’ and Members’ Institute. The confusion in the report is regretted.
