Prizes For Shoppers
Sir,—Grocery lines are increasing in price. Supermarkets—the “cheap” way to shop —grow bigger and better. Prizes are being offered to shoppers—one organisation offers 120,000 prizes. Who, may 1 ask, pays for all these trips overseas, home appliances, etc., which are offered to prize-winners? Perhaps if all thl-. was cut out, groceries need not rise in price.— Yours, etc., CONSUMER. March 1, 1967.
[The General-Manager of Foodstuffs (Christchurch), Ltd,. (Mr R. W. Thomas), replies: “We thank the consumer for this letter. Competitions are organised for the promotion of groceries, and various prizes offered help the promotion to have its full effect. The interest taken in promotions such as this indicates the public’s enthusiasm The over-all cost is shared between a large number of promoters and sponsors, and the giocers themselves, who are compensated by a large increase in business during the currency of the promotion.”]
