Waste Study Effort In Accountancy

Concern at the wasted effort put into study and at the small number of qualified accountants entering the New Zealand Society of Accountants was expressed by the chairman of the Canterbury branch of the society (Mr J. P. Goldsmith) at the Christchurch Accountant Students’ Society’s annual meeting yesterday. More than 3000 students presented themselves for the society's examinations each year, but only two or three hundred entered the society each year, he said. “A great number are Hilling by the wayside each year, and the demand for well qualified people is steadily growing.” Mr Goldsmith said a technician’s certificate would be introduced, and while students might not be able to qualify for membership of the society they might qualify for clerical work in offices. There was a real need for this type of person as at present offices were relying on older men and married women, he said. A degree requisite for mem-

bership of the society would be introduced in 1971, said Mr Goldsmith, and because this would raise the standard of qualification and therefore make it harder for some, the new intermediate qualification envisaged by the certificate would keep those of lesser ability within the profession. Officers elected were - President, Mr A. W. Jones; immediate past president, Mr J. B. Mathewson; secretary, Mr R. Marks; treasurer, Mr R. Ballinger; committee, Messrs R. France, D. Kelly, P. Sargison, J. Drage, M. Bryant, and A. Sparks.
