ESTIMATING FLOODS

Seminar At University

A series of post-graduate seminars on modem techniques in engineering hydrology will be held this year by the extension studies department of the University of Canterbury in co-operation with the School of Engineering and Lincoln College. The first on flood estimation techniques will be held from May 1 to S, and already a quarter of the places have been taken, chiefly by persons concerned with flood control and the design of flood structures.

Lecturers will be Associate Professor E. M. Laurenson, of the department of water engineering at the University of New South Wales; Professor J. R. Burton, of the agricultural engineering department at Lincoln College; Professor F. M. Henderson, of the civil engineering department in Canterbury; and Mr W. C. Boughton, senior lecturer In agricultural engineering at Lincoln.

The seminar has been planned with lectures In the mornings and tutorial sessions in the afternoons when design problems and group projects will be discussed. Topics will include flood estimation in general, unitgraph methods, run-off process and loss rates, reservoir routing, and other techniques. Notes will be sent to members of the seminar for early study.
