BUILDING PERMITS

“Auckland Gets Less” (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Feb. 28. Figures released on the values of building permits approved in various parts of New Zealand indicate that the Auckland metropolitan area is receiving less Government funds for building than other areas, according to the Auckland Master Builders’ Association. The secretary of the association (Mr G. F. Knowles) said today that, while it appeared that the total value of permits for the whole country in the current financial year was to be higher than last year, the value of building in Auckland seemed destined to be appreciably lower.

Permits valued at £28,422,450 had been passed for Auckland over the period May 10, 1965, to October 13, 1966. Although Wellington was little more than half the size of Auckland, plans valued at £22,163,653 had been approved there in the same period.

Most other areas in New Zealand reflected a rise in the value of building plans approved. None appeared to be as hard hit as Auckland, Mr Knowles said. No Railways Staff Cuts (N.Z. Preu association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 28. The Minister of Railways (Mr Gordon) denied today that the Railways Department planned to make staff cuts as part of its investigation into the possible curtailment of uneconomic services. “While it is imperative that uneconomic services be curtailed wherever practicable, there is no intention whatever of dispensing with the services of any members of the staff,” he said.
