Smell From Sewer Vents

Sir, —As a former drainlayer with over 25 years’ experience, I was interested in the complaint by the Aranui Progress League about the odour coming from, it seems, the vented manholes on the streets. If the smell is coming from these vents (which are not very suitable in my opinion), the answer would be to lap the sewer line, and run pipes up to the footpath where a cast-iron vent could be put in to rise above the height of the houses. This would take the smell well up into the air. These vents could be placed at suitable intervals, as in Timaru and other centres. All the vents on the manholes would have to be sealed off, of course.—Yours, etc., READER. February 22, 1967. [The chairman of the Christchurch Drainage Board (Mr F. R. Price) replies: “I have to thank your correspondent for his interest in this problem, and his suggestions have been passed to the technical staff for consideration.’’]
