Sixteen United St; the right to hold the and Winter Games. Mr Newbold Black, chairman of the games and sites sub-committee of the United States Olympic Committee, said the United States felt it had a good chance of getting the 1976 games, because that year would mark the twohundredth anniversary of American independence. He added: “We can’t ignore the feeling, however, that the Communist bloc nations have not wanted the games to be held in the United States. “Choice of the United States cities will be made late in 1967 or early in 1968 by the board of directors of the Olympic committee. A decision will be made by the International Olympic Committee in 1970.” The cities bidding for the 1976 summer games are: Champ, Missouri (a new area near St. Louis), Baltimore, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. Those bidding for the winter games are: Denver, Lake Placid (New York), Salt Lake City, Seattle, Waterbury (Vermont), and a new sports complex in Maine. The 1968 summer games will be held in Mexico City and the winter games in Grenoble, France. Munich, West Germany, will stage the 1972 summer games and Sapporo, Japan, will be host for the winter games that year.
The last summer games staged in the United States were in Los Angeles in 1932.
