Three Wins From Riordan Stable

“The Press’* Special Service AUCKLAND.

D. J. Riordan saddled three winners at Te Aroha on Saturday, but *t was not his first racing treble. Riordan, who has been training five years, rode three winners in one day at Strat-

ford nearly 15 years ago. His winners on that programme were Trench Pal, Aboukir Bay, and Emotional, and he was narrowly beaten on Best of All by Programme, ridden by J. G. Dulieu. The three winners for Riordan’s stable at Te Aroha were Sally Gaye (a division of the Maiden Handicap), Mannix (Juvenile Handicap), and Gay Future (Waitoa Handicap). Sally Gaye, which caused a major upset, was ridden by K. J. Smith, who is apprenticed to Riordan. The other two were ridden by Riordan’s younger brother, J. P. Riordan. Mannix gave Riordan his sixteenth success with two-year-olds and his third win in the Te Aroha Juvenile Handicap. He was previously successful with Paye Gold and Mateland. The Riordan stable’s two-year-old winners are Mannix (four wins), Mateland (four), Innes Lady (two), Gay Future (two), Paye Gold (two), Grizzly, and Synola. Retinue In Open Class Retinue, for which Mr J. Y. Scales, of Christchurch, paid 500 guineas at the sale of mixed stock at Trentham last month, wiii'l not get a start in the South Island until the Oamaru meeting next month. Retinue was to have had his first race for Mr Scales in the Ahurirl Hack Handicap at Motukarara this week. But his trainer was informed on Friday by the New Zealand Racing Conference that the horse is not eligible for hack races. Both Mr Scales and his trainer, R. p. Register, believed the horse was still a hack when purchased. The catalogue said that he had won four races. When Register checked the stakes won he found in the official results in the “Racing Calendar” that in one of the races Retinue finished second. He decided there must have been mistakes in the journal’s index and in the catalogue. But Retinue had received the winner’s stake for the race, the Weraroa Hack Handicap at the Levin Racing Club’s meeting In November, 1965. The winner, Jubilee Boy, returned a positive test and in February, 1966, was disqualified. Retinue was promoted to first. Retinue has been entered for the Papakaio Handicap, the main race for stayers on the first day at Oamaru. On the second day he will run in either the Pukeuri High-weight or the Oamaru Autumn Cup.
