OWNERSHIP OF FARMS

“Statement A Smoke-screen”

(N Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 27. The Auckland provincial president of Federated Farmers (Mr W. Martin) today scouted the suggestion by the Director-General of Agriculture (Mr Webb) that there should be public ownership of farms through company promotion.

Mr Webb said in Napier on Friday that with public ownership of farms through companies, the farm labourer would have the same opportunity as workers in industry to advance to in-charge positions or even a stake in directorship through shareholding. Mr Martin said Mr Webb’s statement was a smoke-screen to hide the Government’s irresponsibility in trying to blame farmers for years of short-sighted Government policy.

“Successive Governments have almost priced the farmer out of world markets by fostering secondary industries and allowing costs of production continually to rise,” he said.

“This encouraged labour to seek jobs in industry and leave rural employment.”
