Search Of Ruins
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter)
BELIZE (British Honduras). Specially equipped divers will search a large pond at the Altun Ha site of the ancient Mayan civilisation, 30 miles from Belize, for evidence to support a theory that the Mayans practised human sacrifice. This is part of archaeological research by a Canadian expedition which will be working at the Altun Ha ruins until next year. Divers will explore dark recesses of the pond for any traces of human sacrifice. The Mayan Empire flourished between the second and eighth centuries A.D., then dwindled, but had a revival which lasted until the arrival of the Spaniards in the 16th century.
