SUMNER SEWER

Concern On Progress

The Sumner-Redcliffs branch of the Labour Party has expressed concern about possible unnecessary delays in completion of the new sewer connecting Sumner to the sewage treatment works at Bromley. Mr M. M. Dent, secretary of the branch, said yesterday that the work had a high priority, but members of the branch were concerned that the Christchurch Drainage Board would give an assurance that the work would be expedited. About three months had elapsed before the successful tenderer had begun work on the first stage of the sewer from the road tunnel roundabout to the Heathcote bridge, Mr Dent said. On the present rate of progress it appeared that the project would take many years to finish. Could not successive tenders be called for further stages between the Heathcote bridge and Sumner so it would be possible to have a number of contractors working at the same time? he asked.

This type of planning had been done previously, and he mentioned Rockinghorse road as an example where it had been of advantage.
