U.S. Firms Give University £6000
The American Council of Learned Societies (using Ford Foundation funds) last year gave 50,000 dollars to establish a chair of American studies and promised 25,000 dollars for books if an equal amount was raised in New Zealand. The New Zealand branches of six big American companies—Ford, General Motors, 1.8. M., International Harvester, Kodak, and Mobil—have each given £lOOO to the University of Canterbury to help it qualify for the £lO,OOO promised by the American Council of Learned Societies if this figure was matched in funds for library books for American studies.

The book collection would be “the finest in this part of the world.” The Vice-Chancellor also announced the following gifts:— From the Governor-General (Sir Bernard Fergusson), three volumes of proceedings of the Third World Congress on Earthquake Engineering. Rutherford Table From Mr Douglas George Rutherford, a cousin of Lord Rutherford, an oval pedestal table brought by Lord Rutherford’s grandmother to Nelson in one of the first vessels to arrive there from England. It will be added to the university collection of Rutherford relics. From A. C. Nottingham, Ltd., £l5O a year for two years for chemical research on detergents. From Mrs L. A. Lewis, wife of a Nelson doctor, a perimeter, to measure fields of vision, for use in the psychology department. From the Vernon Willy Trust, a grant for Mr A. C. Rayner, lecturer in economics, to produce price and quantity data for the sheep and wool industries.
