Ceremony At New Cathedral
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, February 26.
A colourful and impressive ceremony was held today in the Auckland Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Trinity to mark the virtual completion of the first stage of the building.
About 1000 invited guests packed the completed portion —the Lady Chapel, the area
which will hold the bishop's throne, the choir, the Marsden Chapel and the organ loft—for a service of thanksgiving and renewal. Another 700 people filled nearby St. Mary’s Cathedral to watch a live closed-circuit telecast of the service. The Archbishop of York, the Most Rev. Dr. F. D. Coggan, gave the sermon. Among the guests were the Governor-General (Sir Bernard Fergusson) and Lady Fergusson, and the Minister of Housing (Mr Rae), who attended as the Prime Minister’s representative. Colourful clerical robes stood out against the starkness of the undecorated cathedral. The lessons were read by Sir Bernard Fergusson, and the vicar of Glen Innes, the Rev. Canon M. Cameron. Dr. Coggan’s sermon discussed the place of a modern cathedral as a centre of worship and evangelism. Dr. Coggan left Auckland today to visit Rotorua, Hamilton, Nelson, Wellington, Dunedin and Christchurch before flying to Australia next Sunday.
