Farm Workers’ Pay
Sir,—“Amazed” must be congratulated on opening up this topic. Certainly, farm workers should be adequately remunerated. The report of Mr J. L. Morris and Dr. R. G. Cant, of Lincoln College, was also complementary and most useful. Now I make the suggestion that the farm workers must organise themselves by forming a trade union. What with insidious inflation, Governmental deliberate action in raising the general cost of living, even £23 16s a week is inadequate these days. Farming is New Zealand’s basic industry. When the formali-
ties are in train for a farm workers’ union I hope intellectuals like Mr Morris and Dr. Cant will control the educational side of this proposed farm workers’ union. The Government or lotteries should finance a world trip for delegates to gather the best information available.— Yours, etc., RALPH S. WHEELER. Timaru, February 26, 1967.
