Win For Wellington Band

(N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, February 26. It was a bonny day for the supporters of the City of Wellington Highland Pipe Band on Saturday, for it won the A grade aggregate at the Dominion Pipe Band Championship at Rugby Park for the sixth successive time. With this win the Wellington band has now carried off the championship 11 times since its inception in 1930, six more than its nearest rival, Dunedin Highland. The Canterbury Caledonian Society’s Highland Pipe Band won the B grade aggregate for the first time since 1957. The Wellington band gained its win from Its performance in the test piece on Friday, finishing with 191.333 points, five ahead of the Scottish Society of New Zealand Pipe Band. However, in the quickstep on Saturday afternoon these placings were reversed, but only by a small margin. The Scottish Society of New Zealand were awarded 197.876 points, the City of Wellington 197.808, and the third placegetter, the City of Invercargill Caledonian Pipe Band, 197.378. The Invercargill band also won the street march. The Wellington band would have won had it not had four points deducted for arriving late at the starting point.
