Akaroa Sports Ground Rent May Be Doubled

The Akaroa Town Commit tee plans to double the rentals for the use by sporting bodies of the Akaroa sports ground. The chairman of the committee (Mr W. R. Dewey) told the county council that rentals had to be increased to meet maintenance costs. He said his committee had agreed that as the rentals had not been increased for many years they could now be possibly doubled. This means that some clubs with only a few members may have to find as much as £4O a year to use the ground. Representatives of five sporting bodies met the committee and agreed that increased maintenance costs should be met by the clubs. The committee was told that some clubs would have extreme difficulty finding extra rent because of their size and financial position. Representatives of the croquet club said it had only 14 members, but agreed to find £4O for rent. Basketball delegates said their club was mainly younger girls and an increase of £2O could be very difficult to find. The tennis club delegate said the club would probably be able to find £2O a year, but the cricket club said the high cost of equipment made it impossible to find a further £2O. The club agreed to pay £1 a game with a minimum of £lO a season. The football club said that only schoolboy footballers would be using the ground now and they would be unable to pay more than the present £lO.

The committee will write to all the clubs concerned advising that it believes all rents should be doubled and that any submissions to ' the contrary should be made in writing.
