Women’s Softball MONOWAI CLUB CHAMPION

Monowai, easily defeating Spreydon, won the 1966-67 senior women’s softball competition for the fifteenth time when the inter-club competitions ended on Saturday. With its win over Spreydon, Monowai retained an unbeaten record this season. The club’s last important matches this season Results: Monowai U, Spraydon 1. Christchurch West 22, Avon 20.

Christchurch West v„ Avon West managed to score two runs In Ils first innings, largely because of fielding errors. K. Noonan hit a home run in the second, allowing three other players to score. With I. Jones and Noonan hitting well In the fourth, four further runs were added. West produced better batting in the fifth innings, and with good hits by L. Cameron, J. Davies and a two-bagger by C. Mullally, five runs were scored.

West took the lead for the first lime in its sixth Innings by scoring six runs. Another run in the last Innings enabled West to win by the slender margin of two runs.

Avon began in grand style, scoring seven runs in its first Innings, the highlight being a homer by B. Clark. By scoring four runs in the third Avon retained Its four-run lead.

By the fifth innings Avon was trailing by two runs and could not make up this leeway. Monowai v. Spreydon

Monowai took a strong hold on its game with Spreydon when in its first innings home runs by B. Turbott and N. Beaie and a long drive by L. Leask helped the side to score six runs. A hit by B. driving in their last Innings enabled Monowai to score five runs. Highlights of this innings were a homer by Leask and a three-bagger by J. Lee. Spreydon failed to master the pitching of B. Maklnson, who pitched a good no-hit game and took seven strike-out. Makinson only allowed four runners on base throughout the game. Spreydon’s S. Pateman pitched very well, considering that she is not the regular pitcher. She gave up eight hits and allowed seven walks, and scored the only run of the game for Spreydon in the second innings.
