Caughley Wins Queen’s Belt Shooting
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. The Masterton rifleman, D. J. Caughley, dominated the National Rifle Association’s championship at Trentham last week. He captured the Wellington championsihip, the Service championship, and the grand aggregate. Then, on Saturday, he came from behind over the final range to peg back the overnight leader, W. Oakley (Malvern), to take the Queen’s belt for the national championship by one point.
After shooting bullseyes with his first two shots, Oakley had looked set for his second championship. But his form faded and Caughley began his recovery.
Shooting confidently, Caugh ley recorded 47 out of a pos sib'le 50 points.
A. Sowerby and Oakley prolonged the afternoon’s tension when they shot off for second place and the West Memorial Trophy. After five shots to decide the placing the marksmen were tied, and underwent a suddendeath shoot-off.
Both registered bullseyes in their first shots, but in the sec-
ond Oakley faulted and Sowerby secured second placing. Highlight of the final day’s shooting was the possible shot by R. Wilton (Masterton).
