UNDER-23 SIDE FACES DEFEAT

(New Zealand Press Association)

WANGANUI.

In spite of promising individual performances, the New Zealand under-23 cricket team faces a crushing defeat in its three-day match against Central Districts at New Plymouth.

Dismissed for 140 in its first innings and set the mammoth task of scoring 340 runs for victory in its second, the under-23 team finished the second day’s play 39 for four.

The under-23s were bewildered by the pace of G. A. Bartlett and left floundering by the guile of B. W. Yuile and V. Pollard.

Central quickly dismissed the last three under-23 batsmen for the addition of only 13 runs to the overnight score of 127—and the first day’s star batsman, W. J. Mitchell, without addition to his score of 74.

The District’s batsmen had a near-perfect pitch on which to redeem their first innings failures. The colts’ bowling never rose to great heights, apart from three superb spells by the left-arm fast bowler, R. O. Collinge, and six of the Central batsmen scored 20 or better in a total of 271.

The conspicuous failure was the skipper, Pollard. Out to a simple leg-side catch for eight in the first innings, Pollard stayed less than an over for two in his second knock. He swung a lusty cross-bat at J. M. Mclntyre, missed, and was bowled middle stump. B. E. Congdon scored a dashing 46, in only 55 minutes, while G. W. Douglas (63 not out), P. J. Courts (33) and D. N. MacLeod (30) plaved useful innings. The under-23 batsmen looked completely at sea in the final 76 minutes to stumps. Bartlett took two wickets for nine runs. Scores: CENTRAL DISTRICTS
